History
The late Michael D. Alcorn, AIA, a professional architect and university professor, knew the value of additional higher education. Mr. Alcorn was a 1966 Grayville High School graduate and received degrees from the University of Kentucky, University of Illinois, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Michael Alcorn, AIA, had over 20 years of experience in project design and the administration of architectural projects located throughout the United States. Before Mr. Alcorn’s association with Tate Snyder Kimsey, which is ranked as one of the Top 50 design firms in the nation, he was project designer for the A.C. Nielsen International Headquarters in Brookfield, Illinois, the Wilshire Doheny Office Building in Veverly Hills, California (winner of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce Design Award), and project manager for the Roybal Federal Building in Los Angeles, California, and Principal Financial Group Headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa and a federal office complex in Reston, Virginia.
Throughout his career, Mr. Alcorn was involved in architectural education, teaching at several universities and serving as director of the UNLV School of Architecture. Mr. Alcon maintained an active interest in architectural history and he was project manager for several historical renovation projects including the Banker’s Life Office Building in Des Moines, Iowa (Architectural Record’s 1939 “Building of the Decade.”) Mike wrote feasibility and renovations studies for the Los Angeles Federal Courthouse, the Utah State Capital and Governor’s Mansion and architectural guidelines for the addition to the Foley Square Federal Courthouse in New York City.
Mike finished a monograph on nineteenth century mail-order architect George Barber based upon five years of research and his traveling exhibit of Barber’s work. He also worked with the AIA Las Vegas and the Architecture Studies Library at UNLV organizing a “First Generation of Las Vegas Architects Exhibit” which was displayed in October, 2000.
His parents were the late Ralph and Maynette (Jarboe) Alcorn. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Becki Alcorn of Grayville.
